Sikkim: Pakyong District Cricket Committee Hosts Successful Inter School Cricket Tournament Finals
On May 27, the Pakyong District Cricket Committee, in collaboration with the Sikkim Cricket Association (SICA), successfully hosted the finals of the Inter School Cricket Tournament 2024 at St Xavier’s School ground.
The event was honored by the presence of Tashi Chophel, DC Pakyong, as the chief guest, and Rinzing Chophel Rai, ASP Pakyong, as the guest of honor. In his address, DC Pakyong lauded the committee for providing young students with platforms to hone their skills and gain valuable exposure. He underscored the significance of female participation in sports and praised the dedication of their coaches. Furthermore, he motivated the students to aim high, showcasing their talents at national and international levels.
BK Dhamala, DFO Social Forestry and President of Pakyong District Cricket Committee, expressed his gratitude for the committee’s unwavering support and shared his optimistic vision for the future of the young players. Sonam Palden Bhutia, a senior coach at SICA, highlighted the association’s commitment to the holistic development of children, including improving their interpersonal skills and fostering strong relationships among peers and teachers. He reaffirmed SICA’s dedication to supporting the children’s growth in all aspects.
The finals featured two thrilling matches in both the boys’ and girls’ categories. In the girls’ category, Amba Secondary School faced off against Rangpo Senior Secondary School. After winning the toss, Amba SS chose to bat first and set a target of 51 runs. Despite a strong effort, Rangpo SSS fell short by 2 runs. In the boys’ category, Rhenock Senior Secondary School competed against St Xavier’s School. Rhenock SSS batted first, scoring an impressive 130 runs, and ultimately won the match by 12 runs, with St Xavier’s School unable to reach the target.
Standout players included Normit Lepcha from Amba SS and Bitu Kumar Shah from Rhenock SSS, both of whom were named players of the match in their respective categories.
The event was well-attended, with dignitaries such as BP Sharma, JD Education; Father Francis Banerjee, Principal of St Xavier’s School, and officials from various departments and SICA. The matches were officiated by umpires Pramod Kr Singh and Data Ram Regi, with Neela Rai and Karma Thilay Bhutia serving as scorers. The tournament not only showcased the cricketing talents of young students but also highlighted the strong community support for nurturing future sports stars.
