Guwahati Braces for Cyclone Remal’s Impact: Heavy Rainfall and Gusty Winds
On May 28, Guwahati witnessed heavy rainfall and strong winds as Cyclone Remal made its presence felt in Northeast India. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) reported that temperatures in Assam remained below 30 degrees Celsius, with Silchar recording a temperature of 31.2 degrees Celsius.
The shift in weather conditions comes as a welcome relief for Assam, which had been grappling with scorching temperatures soaring up to 40 degrees Celsius. The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) in Guwahati issued warnings of extremely heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, lightning, and strong surface winds for several districts, including Karimganj, Cachar, Dima Hasao, and Goalpara.
In addition to these districts, Dhubri, Barpeta, South Salmara Mancachar, and Hailakandi are anticipated to experience very heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and strong winds. Meanwhile, other districts in the state are forecasted to encounter light showers and thunderstorms.
While Cyclone Remal has wreaked havoc in West Bengal, claiming the lives of four individuals and causing extensive damage to nearly 29,500 houses, its impact in Assam is predominantly characterized by heavy rainfall and gusty winds. The cyclone made landfall between the coasts of West Bengal and Bangladesh on the night of May 26, displacing over 207,000 people, with approximately 77,000 individuals still seeking refuge in rescue camps.
