Assam CM Commends Power Department’s Quick Response in Cyclone Remal Aftermath

Guwahati, May 29, 2024 — Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has extended his appreciation to the power department for their prompt actions in restoring electricity across Guwahati and other parts of the state following the aftermath of Cyclone Remal.

Taking to X (formerly Twitter), Chief Minister Sarma expressed his gratitude, stating, “My thanks to @apdclsocial for swiftly restoring power supply in Guwahati and across Assam (excluding some areas in Golaghat) despite challenges from Cyclone Remal. The team’s dedication amidst fallen trees, and damaged transformers and power lines showcases a new work culture in Assam.”

Cyclone Remal wreaked havoc in Assam, leading to widespread disruptions in power supply and infrastructure. In the Pub Sarania area of Guwahati, two electric poles collapsed on Monday night, resulting in an ongoing power outage that has yet to be fully resolved. Residents have expressed frustration with the Assam Power Distribution Company Limited (APDCL) over the delay in addressing the issue.

While significant progress has been made in restoring power to most parts of Guwahati, challenges persist in areas like Pub Sarania, underscoring the complexities faced by the power department in certain regions.

The impact of the cyclone extended beyond Guwahati, with Nagaon district witnessing uprooted trees and damaged APDCL infrastructure. Concerns over safety and reports of property damage have led authorities to consider the closure of schools in affected areas.

Despite these hurdles, the swift response of APDCL in many affected regions reflects a commitment to overcoming obstacles and ensuring the timely reinstatement of essential services. The commendation from Chief Minister Sarma highlights the government’s recognition of the dedication and efforts of frontline workers during challenging times.
