Arunachal Pradesh DDMA Takes Action Against Hazardous Structures, Demolishes Shops at 6 Kilo

Responding to escalating risks posed by landslides, floods, and road blockades in Itanagar, the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) of Arunachal Pradesh executed a significant operation by demolishing six shops situated at 6 Kilo, Arunachal Pradesh.

The decision by DDMA follows a stern public notice issued on June 24, mandating immediate evacuation of residents residing near landslide-prone zones, hills, valleys, hill slopes, flood paths, rivers, and nallahs. The notice explicitly warned of impending eviction drives aimed at clearing structures obstructing natural water flow.

Critical concerns highlighted in the notice include the construction of residential and commercial buildings over natural drains, impeding rainwater drainage systems. DDMA officials also pointed out the heightened risk of blockages due to construction debris discarded along roadways, exacerbating debris accumulation in roads, nallahs, and culverts during heavy rainfall.

Exercising authority granted under the Disaster Management Act 2005, DDMA stressed the urgency of vacating areas vulnerable to landslides, hill slopes, flood paths, rivers, and nallahs to mitigate potential human casualties. Residents failing to comply with evacuation directives were forewarned that they assume all risks and would not be eligible for compensation in case of disasters stemming from unauthorized construction and land modifications.

Additionally, DDMA reassured residents that the District Disaster Management Authority stands ready to provide assistance in the event of any natural calamity, ensuring swift response and support.

The demolition of shops at 6 Kilo underscores DDMA’s proactive measures to preempt disaster risks and safeguard residents across vulnerable zones in Arunachal Pradesh.
