Man Fatally Attacked by Wild Elephant While Defending Village Crops in South West Garo Hills

Jolgaongre, South West Garo Hills, July 15, 2024 — Tragedy struck Jolgaongre village as 26-year-old Rikrak S. Sangma lost his life in a valiant effort to protect local vegetation from a herd of wild elephants. The son of Meckenson Ch. Marak, Sangma was fatally attacked by an elephant during an evening encounter while tending to his forest land.

The incident occurred between 7:00 and 7:30 PM when a herd of wild elephants ventured into the area, posing a threat to crops. Sangma, along with fellow villagers, attempted to drive away the elephants to safeguard their agricultural resources. Sadly, during this courageous act, he was attacked by one of the elephants, leading to his tragic death.

Local authorities swiftly responded to the scene, recovering Sangma’s body from the village with the help of villagers who had gathered to assist.

The South West Garo Hills administration is set to launch an investigation into the circumstances of the attack. Efforts will also focus on implementing measures to mitigate human-wildlife conflicts in the region, ensuring the safety of both residents and wildlife.

The community mourns the loss of Rikrak S. Sangma, remembering him for his bravery and dedication to protecting village resources amidst the challenges posed by wildlife encounters.
