Assam to Launch Major Tree-Planting Drive in August with a Target of Three Crore Saplings

Guwahati, July 20, 2024 — Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced an ambitious tree-planting initiative scheduled from August 1 to 15, aiming to plant three crore saplings to improve the state’s forest cover.

At a press conference, Sarma outlined the state’s broader objective of planting 10 crore saplings over the next three to four years, which is projected to increase Assam’s forest cover by two percent. Last year, the state exceeded its one-crore target by planting 1.12 crore saplings, achieving a 90 percent survival rate.

The campaign, named ‘Amrit Briksha Andolan,’ will see collaboration from various agencies and central forces, including the army, air force, SSB, CRPF, and BSF, as well as schools, colleges, self-help groups, and NGOs.

Sarma also emphasized ongoing afforestation efforts in areas reclaimed from forest encroachments and Brahmaputra River erosion. “Our goal is to make a significant environmental impact within the next five to six years through these extensive planting efforts,” he stated.
