Meghalaya Power Minister Confirms Potential Reopening of Umiam Dam Bridge by End of July
Shillong, July 27 — Meghalaya Power Minister Abu Taher Mondal has announced that the Umiam Dam bridge is projected to reopen to regular traffic by the end of July. This update follows recent inspections and discussions concerning the bridge’s retrofitting and maintenance.
Mondal stated that the Umiam bridge, which serves as a crucial connection between Meghalaya and Shillong, is on track for a potential full reopening. A crucial meeting involving experts from IIT-Guwahati, police, Public Works Department (PWD) officials, and representatives from the East Khasi Hills and Ri-Bhoi district administrations is set for July 29 to finalize the reopening schedule.
The bridge has been under extensive retrofitting and maintenance since December 14, 2023, with delays extending beyond the initially estimated 4-5 months provided by IIT-Guwahati. The upcoming meeting aims to address final details and confirm the bridge’s readiness for use.
