Meghalaya Tourism Industry Condemns NGO Actions Against Tourists
Shillong, Meghalaya, July 28, 2024 — The tourism sector in Meghalaya has strongly condemned the illegal halting of tourists by NGOs and pressure groups in key tourist destinations such as Sohra and Dawki. Industry representatives voiced serious concerns about the negative impact these actions are having on tourism.
On July 26, members of the Hynniewtrep National Youth Federation (HNYF) detained Assam-registered vehicles at Umtyngar junction, approximately 20 km from Shillong. The group demanded that these vehicles, many carrying tourists to popular spots like Sohra and Dawki, turn back. This incident has resulted in a significant drop in tourism, with bookings down by 30% and potential cancellations reaching 50%.
Tourism industry leaders have called on these groups to cease their intimidation tactics, arguing that such actions are damaging the state’s reputation and economy. They also highlighted recent instances of lawlessness, including violence against workers, and pointed to a US travel advisory as a sign of the need for urgent measures to restore normalcy.
The HNYF has reportedly demanded a policy to restrict the entry of vehicles from outside the state that are carrying tourists, despite police efforts to maintain peace and order.
Despite these challenges, tourism stakeholders have apologized for any inconvenience caused and continue to encourage travelers to visit Meghalaya. They emphasize the state’s natural beauty, hospitality, and the welcoming nature of its people.
