AIUDF MLA Mazibur Rahman Supports Assam Muslim Marriage Bill with Reservations, Vows to Oppose Repeal
Guwahati, August 22, 2024 – In a notable political stance, AIUDF MLA Mazibur Rahman has voiced conditional support for the Assam Compulsory Registration of Muslim Marriages and Divorces Bill, 2024. Rahman highlighted the need for amendments to specific provisions, particularly concerning child marriage, to address community concerns.
While Rahman affirmed his party’s backing for necessary amendments to the bill, he strongly opposed any move to repeal it. “We support amending the bill, but we will fiercely oppose any efforts to repeal it,” Rahman asserted.
He accused Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma of using the bill for communal gains but clarified that the AIUDF supports the registration of marriages and divorces as long as it aligns with Muslim law. Rahman’s comments set the stage for continued debate over the bill and its implications.
