Prime Accused in Dhing Gang Rape Case Dies During Escape Attempt
Tafazul Islam, the prime accused in the recent gang rape of a 14-year-old girl in Dhing, Nagaon district, died early this morning after attempting to escape police custody. Islam, who was arrested on August 23, tried to flee during an on-site investigation at 4 a.m. by jumping into a nearby pond.
The police had taken Islam to the crime scene for further inquiries when he suddenly made a dash for freedom. He plunged into the pond, leading officers to believe he might have drowned. A rescue operation was immediately launched, and after two hours of searching, Islam’s lifeless body was recovered.
Islam was one of three men implicated in the heinous crime that has shaken Assam. The incident occurred while the victim was returning home from tuition, sparking widespread outrage and calls for justice across the state.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had vowed swift and severe action against those involved in the crime. In light of Islam’s death, CM Sarma reaffirmed the government’s resolve to address such brutal acts with the utmost seriousness under the law.
The search for the two remaining suspects is ongoing, with authorities intensifying efforts to apprehend them and ensure justice for the victim.
