Manipur CM Condemns Attack on BJP Spokesperson’s Family, Vows Legal Action

Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh has condemned a violent attack on the family of BJP spokesperson T Michael Lamjathang Haokip in Churachandpur district. The incident, which occurred late on August 25, involved vandalism and arson at Haokip’s residence in Phailien village.

Describing the attack as “an act of cowardice,” Singh emphasized its threat to state unity and integrity, stating on X (formerly Twitter), “The attack on the family members of Michael Lamjathang, a respected leader of the Thadou community, is a direct challenge to our unity and integrity.”

Singh pledged to pursue legal action against those responsible, asserting, “We will initiate appropriate legal action against the culprits.”

This attack is the second on Haokip’s residence amid ongoing tensions in Manipur. Haokip, a member of the Thadou tribe, has expressed concerns on social media, urging prayers and support for his community.

The incident follows recent calls from three MLAs in the region for a separate administration within Manipur and a push for the recognition of their tribes by specific names rather than the collective term “Kuki-Zo.”
