Four Arrested in Shillong for Extortion and Threats, Including HNYM Members
Shillong, Meghalaya — In a significant development, Meghalaya police have apprehended four individuals, including two members of the Hynniewtrep National Youth Movement (HNYM), for their alleged involvement in an extortion attempt and threats against a local family. The arrests came after weeks of investigation into the incident, which had escalated from financial demands to a home invasion.
The suspects have been identified as Garnett Gedian Khongwir (30) and Kyrshanbor Lyngdoh (38), both associated with HNYM, alongside Thounaujam David Singh (41) and Narendra Kabrambam (29). East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police Sylvester Nongtnger confirmed their involvement in the case.
The investigation began after an August 8 incident in which a victim received a phone call demanding Rs 10 lakh. The victim refused to comply, which led to further intimidation. On August 20, three suspects forcibly entered the victim’s home, threatening the victim’s daughter while she was alone.
A formal complaint was filed on August 24, prompting swift police action. Superintendent Nongtnger assured that authorities are working diligently to uncover the full scope of the extortion activities. The arrest of HNYM members has sparked concerns within the community, raising questions about the movement’s role in the crime.
The police are committed to delivering justice and ensuring the safety of residents in the wake of this disturbing incident. Further investigations are ongoing.
