Push for Reciprocal Transport Agreement to Enhance Tourism in Meghalaya

In a concerted effort to improve tourist transportation between Meghalaya and Assam, the All Khasi Hills Tourist Taxi Association (AKMTTA) has urged the state government to implement a Reciprocal Transport Agreement (RTA). This proposal was put forward during a convention organized by the Tourism Department on Friday.

Balajied Jyrwa, the secretary of AKMTTA, emphasized the importance of including Meghalaya in the RTA framework with Assam to facilitate smoother cross-border transport for tourists. “The primary objective of the meeting was to advocate for the implementation of the RTA in our state. This will significantly facilitate the movement of tourist vehicles between Assam and Meghalaya,” Jyrwa stated.

In addition to the RTA, the discussions also covered the issuance of temporary permits for vehicles. The AKMTTA raised concerns regarding the efficiency and fairness of these permits, aiming to ensure equitable access to operational rights within the tourism sector for all its members.

Another key demand from the association involved integrating various organizations under the AKMTTA into the Tourism Department’s upcoming app. Jyrwa highlighted the significance of app-based listings, asserting that this initiative would provide local operators with a fair opportunity to connect with tourists and enhance their visibility.

Cyril Diengdoh, the Tourism Director who chaired the meeting, assured attendees that the government is committed to taking concrete steps to elevate the tourism experience in the region. He announced plans to develop an app that will list all tourist taxi associations, their drivers, and the routes they operate.

“This app will serve as a one-stop platform for tourists, enabling them to make informed decisions while availing local services,” Diengdoh explained. He further noted that local drivers would be trained not only as chauffeurs but also as tour guides, enhancing the overall tourist experience. “To equip them with the necessary skills, we will implement a comprehensive training program,” he added.
