Assault on Private Tutor in Sivasagar Sparks Outrage; Asomiya Yuva Mancha Demands Swift Action Against Accused

Sivasagar, October 20, 2024: A young private tutor, identified as Purabi Dutta, was allegedly assaulted by the parents of her student in Assam’s Sivasagar district. The incident occurred on Amguri Road when Purabi went to collect her pending tuition fees. The accused, Sunil Thakur and his wife, Poonam Devi, reportedly attacked her after previously postponing the payment date from October 12 to October 14.

Purabi recounted her ordeal to the media, explaining that Sunil initially asked her to wait at his shop. When Poonam arrived, she verbally abused Purabi and then physically assaulted her, hitting her with sandals and attempting to attack her with a scissor. A passerby intervened, preventing further harm, but Sunil allegedly grabbed Purabi by the neck, causing injuries.

Following the attack, Purabi sought help from Namti police, who took her to the hospital. However, she alleged that the police pressured her to withdraw the complaint. According to Purabi, the police informed her that they would face challenges during the investigation because she was unable to write her complaint due to her injuries. She claimed that a Village Defence Party (VDP) member named Asad wrote an application on her behalf and obtained her signature.

The incident has sparked outrage, with the Asomiya Yuva Mancha accusing the police of bias in favor of the attackers. Members of the organization have lodged an FIR against Sunil Thakur and Poonam Devi at the Namti police station. They have also issued an ultimatum to the police, demanding the immediate arrest of the accused couple within two hours, warning of serious consequences if no action is taken.
