Violence Erupts in Assam’s Samaguri Constituency Ahead of By-Elections
Samaguri constituency in Assam’s Nagaon district is witnessing increasing violence as the by-election approaches, with political rivalries intensifying and leading to disturbing incidents in recent days.
On Sunday, Congress candidate Tanzil Hussian became the target of an attack while campaigning in the Udmari area of Samaguri. Hussian’s vehicle was reportedly vandalized by suspected BJP supporters, who damaged two vehicles in the incident. Hussian quickly reported the attack to the Samaguri police station, highlighting the tense atmosphere surrounding the election campaign.
Further unrest followed with clashes between Congress and BJP supporters in front of the Samaguri police station. Both sides shouted slogans such as “Congress go back” and “BJP go back,” further fueling the rising political tensions. The presence of prominent Congress leaders, including Rakibul Hussain, Sibamoni Bora, and Nurul Huda, only added to the intensity of the protest.
The violence escalated with the brutal attack on independent candidate Musabbir Ali Ahmed, who was forcibly dragged from his residence in Sutrupohi. Sources revealed that Ahmed was beaten by assailants before being abandoned in a field. The escalating violence has raised serious concerns about voter safety and election integrity, with authorities facing pressure to ensure peace and security as polling day nears.
