Manipur Government Identifies Evictees from Assam, Deports ILP Violators
Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh announced on Monday that the state government is working to identify individuals recently evicted from Assam. Addressing the media in Imphal, Singh confirmed coordination with Assam authorities, who reported the eviction of 500 to 600 individuals.
“We have contacted Assam through the Home Department and received the list. Some of the evictees are from the Ukhrul area and other rural parts of Manipur. We have instructed the concerned District Collectors and Superintendents of Police to verify their identities and determine how long they have been residing there,” Singh stated.
This comes after the Chief Executive Member of Assam’s Karbi Autonomous Council revealed that approximately 500 Kuki families from Manipur had sought refuge in the Karbi Anglong district due to ongoing violence in Manipur. The council announced that these families would be sent back to Manipur and not allowed to settle in Karbi Anglong.
In a related incident, Manipur Police deported 29 individuals from Assam who were working in a bakery in Imphal West for violating the state’s Inner Line Permit (ILP) rules. Chief Minister Singh clarified that these individuals, identified through Aadhaar verification, were apprehended for non-compliance with ILP regulations.
“Under the ILP system, permits are issued to labourers engaged in construction work for government and private agencies. However, these 29 individuals were employed in a bakery, which is not permitted under the ILP framework,” Singh explained.
The developments underscore heightened enforcement of ILP regulations in Manipur and ongoing efforts to address cross-border migration issues amid the region’s volatile situation.
