Tragic Stabbing in Guwahati Claims Life of Mousumi Gogoi

A tragic incident unfolded in Guwahati’s Last Gate locality on December 26, 2024, as 27-year-old Mousumi Gogoi, a resident of Moran in Dibrugarh district, succumbed to fatal stab wounds after a brutal attack. The incident took place around 10:30 AM at Naharani Path, leaving Gogoi with multiple stab wounds to her abdomen, chest, and hand.

Gogoi was immediately rushed to Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) by Hatigaon police, arriving at 11:45 AM. Despite being conscious and responsive upon arrival, her vital signs were unrecordable, and she was later declared dead after medical examination. Dr. Abhijit Sarma, GMCH Superintendent, confirmed that the victim had sustained several lacerations, including to her abdomen, neck, and forearm, and was diagnosed with penetrating trauma and cuts to her neck.

Initial reports suggest that the victim was waiting for a rapido ride when she was attacked by Bhupen Das, a prime suspect identified as a cab driver. He reportedly arrived in a Swift Desire vehicle before committing the crime. Authorities are investigating a potential motive linked to an earlier harassment complaint filed by Gogoi against a man in Panbazar, where she had rejected his advances.

CCTV footage from the police complaint has provided crucial evidence, shedding light on the possible connection between the harassment and the attack. In a subsequent tweet, Assam’s Director General of Police, GP Singh, confirmed that the assailant had been detained. He also revealed that the attacker had self-inflicted injuries and is currently receiving treatment in a hospital.
