Four Dead, Over 20 Sickened After Contaminated Water Outbreak in Silchar

A tragic incident in Bhakatpur, Kathal Road, Silchar, has resulted in the deaths of at least four people and left over 20 others suffering from waterborne diseases after consuming contaminated drinking water. The outbreak, which has affected several residents, is believed to be linked to water supplied under the Bhakatpur Water Project, a part of the Jal Jeevan Mission.

According to local residents, the water supplied to the Sector 4 zone of Bhakatpur was contaminated with harmful substances, leading to a wave of diarrheal diseases. The situation first emerged a week ago when two individuals in the area fell ill, and the number of cases rapidly escalated. Nearly every household in the area has reported incidents of diarrhoea, with 24 individuals being admitted to Silchar Medical College and Civil Hospital for treatment.

The situation took a tragic turn on December 22, when 40-year-old Shankar Dutta and 35-year-old Sharif Uddin succumbed to the illness. Two elderly residents, 65-year-old Putul Mia and 60-year-old Saidur Barbhuiya, passed away on December 23 and 24, respectively.

Local residents have pointed to the Bhakatpur Water Project as the likely source of the contamination, with many claiming the water provided under the project was unsafe for consumption. In response, authorities have collected water samples from the Bhakatpur Water Project and other households in the area for testing.

A medical camp has been set up to provide relief, and the health department is closely monitoring the situation. Preliminary investigations suggest that the contaminated water has led to the widespread outbreak of diarrhoea and other related illnesses.

The tragic incident has caused widespread panic and concern in Silchar, with authorities working to assess the full scale of the contamination and prevent further harm to the local population.
