Assam Book Fair 2025 Breaks Records with Unprecedented Footfall and Sales

The Assam Book Fair, held at the Khanapara Veterinary College Ground, has shattered all previous records, drawing an astounding five lakh visitors as of Tuesday, the highest attendance in the event’s history. The 2025 edition also set a new benchmark in sales, with books worth ₹7 crore sold, surpassing the previous record of ₹6 crore. Over 200 book launches added to the fair’s vibrant literary atmosphere.

The event, which began on December 27 and concludes today, showcased the participation of 118 booksellers and publishers, including major players from Kolkata and Delhi. It also featured renowned authors from Assam, creating a unique platform for literary exchange. Among the highlights, Oja Hemchandra Baruah Vidya Mandir was declared the winner of the Dihanaam contest, a traditional form of congregational prayer unique to Assam.

Assam Education Minister Ranoj Pegu, who inaugurated this year’s edition, emphasized the importance of reading as a cornerstone of intellectual growth. Drawing a parallel with physical fitness, Dr. Pegu remarked, “Just as we prioritize morning walks for our health, we must foster the habit of reading for intellectual well-being.”

The fair also marked the beginning of Assam’s initiative to celebrate 2025 as the ‘Year of Reading.’ Announced by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, this statewide campaign aims to promote reading habits among the youth through initiatives spearheaded by various government departments. With this record-breaking edition, the Assam Book Fair has not only solidified its cultural significance but also set the stage for a year dedicated to fostering a love for books and knowledge.
