IMD Warns of Severe Weather Patterns Across Northeastern States
The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a stern weather advisory, forecasting intense rainfall and thunderstorms across several northeastern states, including Assam, Meghalaya, and Sikkim, on Monday. In addition, substantial precipitation is anticipated in Arunachal Pradesh, West Bengal, and South Interior Karnataka. Coastal Karnataka and districts of Madhya Maharashtra are also bracing for heavy downpours.
According to the IMD, Assam, Nagaland, Meghalaya, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura are at risk of thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds on June 10, heightening concerns of potential hazards and disruptions throughout the region.
Conversely, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, and north interior Karnataka are likely to encounter similar thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds. Mumbai, grappling with the early onset of the southwest monsoon, continues to experience incessant rainfall, leading to widespread waterlogging.
In contrast to the northeastern states, parts of northern India, including Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Gangetic West Bengal, Jharkhand, and regions of Bihar, are expected to face heatwave-like conditions on Monday. Meanwhile, Odisha is bracing for hot and humid weather.
On June 9, severe heatwave conditions were recorded in Madhya Pradesh’s Tikamgarh, Gwalior, and Khajuraho districts, with temperatures soaring above 43 degrees Celsius.
As the monsoon progresses, Mumbai grapples with thunderstorms and heavy rainfall, exacerbating existing waterlogging issues. The IMD urges residents and authorities in the affected northeastern states and other regions to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions in light of these dynamic weather patterns.
