Schools in Shillong to Close for Durand Cup 2024 Opening Ceremony
Shillong, August 1, 2024: The Meghalaya government has ordered the closure of all schools within the Shillong Municipal Area on August 2 in anticipation of the Durand Cup 2024 opening ceremony. The Directorate of School Education & Literacy issued the directive on July 31 to alleviate the “extremely heavy traffic congestions” expected during the event at the JNS Complex, Polo Ground, Shillong.
This measure follows a request from the Director of Sports and Youth Affairs, Meghalaya, aiming to prevent “hardships to the students” who might be delayed by the significant traffic. The prestigious football tournament’s opening is anticipated to draw large crowds and extensive media coverage, contributing to traffic congestion.
The school closure order applies specifically to educational institutions within the Shillong Municipal Area, and parents and students are advised to plan accordingly. Local authorities are expected to provide further updates on traffic management and public transportation to ensure smooth access to the event and minimize disruptions.
