Violence Erupts in Ukhrul as Mob Storms Police Station, Three Lives Lost

Ukhrul, Manipur – A mob raided a police station in Ukhrul town on Thursday, seizing weapons during a violent clash between two groups stemming from a land dispute. The unrest erupted amidst a ‘Swachhata Abhiyan’ cleaning initiative on Wednesday, resulting in three fatalities and 20 injuries.

The attack occurred as a gunfight unfolded between factions of the Naga community. The mob, primarily composed of youths, targeted the police station located in Wino Bazar, reportedly making off with government firearms. While the exact quantity and types of weapons taken remain unclear, unofficial sources indicate that the loot may include AK-47 and INSAS rifles.

In response to the escalating violence, local authorities implemented prohibitory orders and suspended mobile internet services in the area. This incident represents a significant shift in the ongoing ethnic tensions in Manipur, marking the first known instance of a police station being looted in a Naga-majority region, in contrast to previous violence involving the Meitei and Kuki communities.
